Welcome Letter

Dear Friend,
We welcome this opportunity to share with you about Spirit of America, and thank you for your interest in the band.

Dedication to excellence, sharing a love of music, and a family spirit are all characteristics that illustrate the essence of Spirit of America. The ensemble has shared its passion for music and marching with thousands of students and audiences throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and South Korea.

Spirit of America is committed to the pursuit of excellence in music and marching. The ensemble includes a marching band, field band, wind ensemble, and authentic period fife and drum corps. Since its beginnings as a small community band in 1977, Spirit of America has grown to over one hundred members, and won the 2006 Division I Championships of the World Association of Marching Show Bands in Jeju, South Korea.

For a few weeks each summer, Spirit of America goes on tour, performing in exhibition and running clinics for middle and high school band camps. This provides the opportunity to share our love of music, the thrill of performing, and the pride of a great show!

Over the past several years, the band has traveled extensively with a wide variety of performance experiences. During July of 2002, Spirit of America performed their show, entitled Freedom for our country´s service men and women, visiting several military bases in the Washington D. C. and Virginia area. In August of 2003, Spirit of America spent three weeks touring Australia-presenting their show Gershwination and working with over 2,000 young people. During the summer of 2004, the band toured with DCI for two weeks, with performances in Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. In 2005 they toured New England, and in 2006 debuted their Wind Opera "Quest for Honor" in concert halls in South Korea.

During the winter program SOA members who are under twenty-one compete in the Winter Guard International circuit. The show consists of keyboard, percussion, and color guard elements, although many of the percussion players come from other sections of the band.

If you love music, marching, or just being part of a team, join us for a rehearsal weekend to experience firsthand who we are. We look forward to having you as part of our Spirit of America family.

 Sincerely,

 The Spirit of America Staff
