Question: If I want to join, what is the process?
Answer:
A. Come to a weekend band camp (click here for camp weekend dates for this year) or other SOA rehearsals to see what the band is all about.
B. Receive and review carefully a packet of information, which includes a rehearsal and performance schedule, as well as a commitment form.
C. Sign and return the commitment form.
D. Have a musical evaluation with your section leader scheduled for placement in the band.
Question: How do I find out where SOA is performing?

Question: How did SOA come into being?
Answer: SOA started as a small, informal church band in 1978, and has grown in size and reputation over the years into a professional organization, taking the name Spirit of America in 1986.
SOA today includes a field band, marching band, wind ensemble, and fife and drum corps.
Question: Do I have to be a certain age to join?
Answer: You have to be at least 13 years old.
Question: What previous experience is required to join?
Answer: Because SOA is committed to inspiring youth through excellence in the arts, we will accept a musician of any level, but a musical evaluation with your section leader is required to determine placement in the band.

Question: How often does SOA rehearse?
Answer:
From DecemberApril: One evening a week and one weekend a month
From MayAugust: One evening a weekend and every Saturday
Question: What would my time commitment be?
Answer: In addition to attending all rehearsals, you must practice daily and follow a fitness program.
Question: Can I come to an SOA rehearsal?
Answer: Yes, check the Web site for times and locations, or call the band office. When you come, ask for Sister Brigid Minor, or any section leader so that we can answer any question you may have.
Question: What is the band season?
Answer: December to August
Question: How would Spirit of America affect my role in my school band?
Answer: Being part of Spirit of America is meant to enhance what you already do in your school band. If rehearsal or performance conflicts arise, school activities would take priority. (You will need to request permission from your section leader at least two weeks in advance.)
